The following
is the script Irene Allan read at the September 2007
reunion to kick off our Hall of Fame...........
Tonight, as we celebrate old and new friendships,
we must remember those who were instrumental in
introducing us into the drum corps activity
and enabled us to share the many memories that we
now have.
So it is with this in mind that we decided to
establish the First Hall of Fame Awards.
It is with great pleasure that we induct into the
Hall of Fame those who were there in the
beginning---
The Founding Fathers, and some of those who carried
the corps forward.
These visionaries, though faced with great odds and
financial obstacles, found a way, not only to get us
into the Penn-Jersey and other circuits, but
brought us to a level of respect by our competitors
and inspired us to win a few championships along the
way.
It is with great pleasure, that we induct a
gentleman who served as Director and Business
Manager for several years and laid the foundation
for the great years that followed. He was a father
figure to the young members and a confidant to the
older members.
Our first inductee to the Hall of Fame is the late,
George Caliguri.
Our next inductee was invaluable as a Q uartermaster,
while George Caliguri was out front conducting the
day-to-day business of the corps behind the scene
was a man without whose efforts, the corps would
have come to a grinding halt. He virtually turned
his home into a warehouse full of equipment and
uniforms. There was hardly a day that went by
without a member of the corps dropping by for the
repair of an instrument or a piece of a uniform.
His door was always open and he was always available
to help.
His personal life and privacy took a back seat to
the needs of the corps.
We proudly present into this years Hall of Fame, the
late, Tony Guacci.
The next two inductees were invaluable in each of
their respective roles.
As youngsters, it was vital that we had supervision
and nurturing. We had plenty of both, especially on
long or overnight trips. As a chaperone and den
mother, she was always available to wipe a tear,
give a hug, or provide some comfort.
We proudly induct into this years Hall of Fame,
Flo Caliguri.
The next inductee was equally valuable in her role
as seamstress, tailor and maintenance specialist.
It was her job to see to it that we looked our best
at all times. She turned her living room into a
sewing room, with not one, but two sewing machines.
Whenever you entered her house, you were sure to
hear the machines working at full speed. You often
had to take a number to get a repair. She never
complained or asked for thanks. She was always
happy to be of assistance to the corps.
We are proud to induct
Antoinette Guacci into this year’s Hall
of Fame.
Our next inductee needs no introduction. He was the
glue that held the pieces together. His charm,
charisma, and personality lit up a room wherever he
went. He was our brass instructor from 1957 to
1961. He was also our director for a short time.
He lead by example and created a sound that was
easily recognizable and uniquely “Selden’s”. He was
beloved as in instructor, respected as a man, and
cherished as a friend.
We proudly induct into this year’s Hall of Fame,
Joe Calisto.
Our next inductee would leave work in the Patchogue
Sears in his 1953 Buick, drive to Babylon and pack
the car with eight or nine guys and instruments and
then drive back to Selden for rehearsal and when
rehearsal ended, he would reverse the route and
drive them back home…(ask Benny or Carl)….the
stories about those car rides are still being told
today. He was also corps Director. He loved the
kids and the corps and was justifiably proud of the
years he spent with them….for his dedication and
service to the corps
We are proud to induct…… the late,
Bob Allan into
the Hall of Fame.
There were several playing members who were
nominated for induction into this year’s Hall of
Fame, however; the committee decided that this
year’s induction would be reserved for the founding
fathers.
With two exceptions…..
The committee felt that because of the outstanding
contribution to the Selden Cadets by this individual
that he deserved recognition at this time as well.
This member spent 12 consecutive years (in a row)
with the corps, leading by example, and creating a
reputation that was known throughout the world of
drum corps. His name has become synonymous with the
“Selden Cadets”. He was not only a playing member,
but served also as an assistant instructor and
assistant director. He is currently the arranger
and brass instructor of the Alumni Corps.
We proudly induct into this year’s Hall of Fame……Frank
Buscemi.
Our next inductee is someone who needs no
introduction. He was a playing member of the corps
back in “the day” and continues to do and
outstanding job by serving as the webmaster for our
website. Although he is half the country away, he
is our spokesman on the web and is our gateway to
the world……
for his contribution to the corps it is our pleasure
to induct….Paul Auster
into the Hall of Fame.
