Some of the corps that appeared in that "first" were Blessed Sacrament, Garfield, St. Kevin's, Audubon, St. Catherine's Queensmen, Hawthorne Caballeros, Reading Buccaneers, New York Skyliners, Archer-Epler Musketeers and the Troy Interstatesmen.

Drum Corps News also ran a "double eliminator" standstill series in January - March - April of 1962.

The first contest was held in the Boston Garden, and won by the Cambridge Caballeros.

Qualifying for the New Haven "Finals" from that contest were the

St. Kevin Emerald Knights, Cambridge Caballeros, IC Reveries and St. Raphael's Buccaneers.

The second 'prelim' was held at the Mosque Theatre in Newark NJ and won by the St. Catherine of Sienna Queensmen.

The other "qualifiers" were Blessed Sacrament, Garfield Cadets  and The Selden Golden Lancers

The top four corps from Boston & Newark would meet in the Drum Corps News sponsored "Finals"

Lee: With all sincerely due respect for your background and experience, did you ever see Selden , Bridgeport PAL, or Loretto Knights?
Or St. Kevin's, or St. Catherine's? Or St. Vincent's, or St. Rita's? Or many of the other corps Sam suggested? he needs to be cognizant of
time context, relative to state of our art, when referencing. Star93, like, BD, SCV, Cavies, etc 2000 were/are evolutionary embodiments of these corps.
On a very personal level, may I (again, respectfully) suggest that you try to get a hold of the Fleetwood recording of "Brass By Night". I think you will be
surprised by what you hear!!!!!

Juniors, Pre DCI:
1964. The best (and most exciting) year of junior drum corps I ever saw or experienced. (Yeah, there I go again, living in the "pre tour/educational"
past). There were about a dozen junior corps, East & Mid West that, could "on any given Saturday/Sunday" beat all the rest. St. Lucy's,
Boston Crusaders, Blessed Sacrament, Chicago Royal Airs & Cavaliers, St. Kevin's, Racine Kilties, Selden, St Josephs, Vasella Musketeers,
Bridgeport PAL and St Mary's Cardinals & Garfield (at seasons end) and no doubt a couple more I missed, had very strong corps..

Since I also play baritone, this is my :Dream" list: William Hightower, St Catherine's Queensmen, 1961, "Tin Roof Blues/Black Bottom". John Simpson,
USAF Bolling AFB DC, "Summertime", 1962.These guys performed their great, and still remembered solos on Getzen "Deluxe" GD, single valve, 'slide-on -
the-side' bass baritone bugles. Bill Hightower can be heard on Fleetwoods "Brass By Night" concert recording of St Catherine's, Our Lady of Loretto,
Selden , and Floyd Bennett Golden Eagles. John Simpson can be heard on Fleetwoods' double side recording of the 1962 USAF corps.

1964 St Kevin's Emerald Knights. THE GE and "comeback" program of the 1960s.
1967 Boston Crusaders. Kick ass.
1963 Blessed Sacrament Golden Knight's. The clean machine. The most precisely executed field show of the decade.
1968 Casper Troopers. The best Trooper corps of the decade. Hornline had a sound that year that they never again could duplicate. M&M was deadly.
1968 Racine Kilties: THE VFW Finals performance of the decade.
1965 Chicago Royal Airs: Truman Crawford's masterpiece.
1961/62 Our Lady of Loretto and 1961/62 Selden . Hornline's by Genero and Bunce that ROCKED. SAM

Selden  ; Soprano Soloists/Duet 1961/1964 "Mardi Gras March"

till present...(1971 was my age out year in St Joes)...and I see a big difference. There simply aren't as many corps today.
BUT some of the attrition started just a bit before DCI ...I can think of 20 or more corps in New York alone that were prominent in
the late 60's /early 70's that have 'passed on"....I would take myself back to the 1962 Penn-Jersey Championships

Quick summaries of my "nominees":
Hy Dreitzer: Great horn arranger for Skyliners. Really gave the corps that "concrete canyon" sound.
Joe Genero -- brass arranger for Cabs and Hurcs (sometime dm, too). Brought "Carmen" to field years before SCV. One of the tops.
Tommie Martin: legendary soprano soloist for St. Joe's (jr.), Air Force dc, and Skyliners. Still, IMHO, the sweetest sounding bugler (with range!)
 I have ever heard.
Walt "Winkie" Winkleman: Colorful, crowd-pleasing dm of Skyliners.
"Wild Bill" Hooton: Director of Reilly's (Philly) Raiders, whose name says it all.
Bucky Swan: Another great Skyliner "screamer" sop.
Jim D'Amico: Ditto for Hawthorne.
The Bernert family: Founders of the Audubon (NJ) Bon-Bons, all-girl corps.
Bob Bunce: Brass arranger for Selden (LI, NY) Golden Lancers, and, I believe, for the re-tuned "Latin" NY Kingsmen of late 60s.

The 1962 St. Catherine's Queensmen from St. Alban's, NY featured what I believe to be one of the best overall Junior programs for that year.
However, they did not attend the VFW or AL Nationals that year. (Their last, by the way). My question, for those RAMD contibutors from
that era: Had the Queensmen been able to attend the VFW or AL Nationals, where do you think they would have placed?
To refresh your memory Chicago won the VFW and Garfield the AL.

Andy--and all: St. Cath's did have an excellent show example, Joe Gennaro music, Carmen Cluna drill, Bob Thompson drums. Their repertoire included" Start
of Something Big", "Exodus" and, "Theme From the Apartment". They were so good, in fact, that they tied Blessed Sac in 1961.
But please don't forget my own long gone Brooklyn corps, "Our Lady of Loretto Knights" whose instructional staff was the same as
that of St. Cath's, (with the exception of the innovative mind of Don Freising on drums), and who placed second only to the great St.Kevin's
in the previous year's Dream Contest, (by .7 , part of which was .4 equipment penalty).     It was sad that both these corps--as well as the very entertaining
Selden Lancers--never lasted long enough to really get out to the big national shows to truly establish themselves as contenders. In both cases,
the problem was financial--not everyone was as fortunate as Garfield in sponsorship. But had these two corps the chance to make it to the
Nationals that year...stuff that those of us who lived it will always speculate about. BTW EXCELLENT POST for us very oldtimers!
Thank you.... Mario
